Smash cake

We just gave him a cupcake. Wegmans includes a cupcake with the order of a first birthday cake.

People buy a little cake to give the baby and let them mush all over themselves. It's gross.

Life is short. Get messy. Be silly. Enjoy the small things - like babies eating a cake.

I don't enjoy being messy, and I didn't want my 1 yr olds eating cake. I do however, enjoy being silly and enjoying small things. But hey, way to trot out clichés.

I think it's getting a bad rap because it's often done in conjunction with a special photo shoot. It just kinda feeds into the idea that we're overdoing it a bit with our kids.

Like, we have so much disposable income we're buying an expensive mini wedding cake & a photographer to watch our child destroy it.

Because cake 1 day out of your 1 year olds year is totally going to put them on the road to bad eating habits for life. Talk about a Debbie downer.

A smashcake is fun for some people. My only suggestion is that if you do it, make sure this isn't his first exposure to cake/frosting. We tried to do one with my son and he just looked at it...had no idea what to do with it.

What? I had a smash cake when I was 1 in the early 80s. Nothing new about this.

Same here I think the old photos r funny first time I ever had sugar I went nuts! Ps I don't have eating issues and I am not close to being overweight, let the kid eat some cake for his bday!

I made my 1 year old's birthday cake and thought about doing a healthy, low sugar option. But you know, she eats healthy 99.9% of the time and IT'S HER DAMN BIRTHDAY. So she got a regular white birthday cake with regular homemade white frosting (with sprinkles!) and she loved it. Also, trying to avoid messiness with a young toddler seems like an exercise in futility.

I would not have bought a smash cake, but since I was making cake anyways, it was easy to just throw some batter into another small pan. She liked the frosting WAY more than the cake itself (I wonder why?), so I'm glad she got her own instead of a slice with a little bit of icing on it.

Yeah, these people are the worst. I'm embarrassed for them.

Smash cakes are horrid and go against everything the birthday cake actually means (to share the sweetness of another year of life). I often wonder what people without enough food think of this ridiculous and new tradition of letting a baby smash an entire cake...

My friends baby was not into the smash cake and hated the frosting on her hands, but the family kept pushing it so they could get pictures. I felt bad for the birthday boy, he hated it and was close to tears by the time it was over.

I don't get all the people that is somehow "fun" for the poor kid.

DCUM is the only place I've ever heard "smash cake". Not one friend has ever had anything like it. I think it is just plain stupid. I also don't get why it is considered cute...looks pretty gross to me!

Anyway. We had cupcakes. I'm sure a bit got on my son's face, but that's natural and was wiped away easily w/o fuss as it happened. There wasn't any 'smashing' intentionally involved.

I just baked a cake and gave the baby a piece of it. Baby was fine smashing and eating his/her own piece.
