It's disgusting and I would never do it. I do not think messy kids are cute or funny. People buy a little cake to give the baby and let them mush all over themselves. It's gross.
Life is short. Get messy. Be silly. Enjoy the small things - like babies eating a cake.
I don't enjoy being messy, and I didn't want my 1 yr olds eating cake. I do however, enjoy being silly and enjoying small things. But hey, way to trot out clichés.
I made my 1 year old's birthday cake and thought about doing a healthy, low sugar option. But you know, she eats healthy 99.9% of the time and IT'S HER DAMN BIRTHDAY. So she got a regular white birthday cake with regular homemade white frosting (with sprinkles!) and she loved it. Also, trying to avoid messiness with a young toddler seems like an exercise in futility. I would not have bought a smash cake, but since I was making cake anyways, it was easy to just throw some batter into another small pan. She liked the frosting WAY more than the cake itself (I wonder why?), so I'm glad she got her own instead of a slice with a little bit of icing on it.
