| My husband has cancer. I am grateful for everyone's prayers. I pray we have the strength and grace to get through this. |
Who decides who gets cancer and who doesn't? |
It's not a "decision;" it's just a fact. An occurance, based on a multitude of factors, including lifestyle, genetics, environment and sometimes just plain dumb luck. |
So God is not all powerful? God can help "cure" cancer with prayers, but not prevent it in a child? |
Here we go again. PP, with all due respect there are already about 359,639,179,830,279 threads that address this topic, but.... God is absolutely all powerful. God can and does cure people from cancer and every other disease, including their own sin. Cancer - like all disease, destruction and evil in the world - is not of God. It is the opposite of God, in that it is evil. Evil is part of the broken world that we live in. It is simply a fact. We are all going to leave this world, one way or the other, through death. Some people will die of cancer, many others will not. It is part of the "how" that we die, as there is no "if" we will die. Death itself is part of the evil that exists in this world. But the Good News -- through Jesus Christ -- is that He has overcome the world. |
And God isn't the creator of all? If he is, he created evil. He created disease, he created destruction, and he created evil in the world. And don't start on some "Satan" craziness - God created Satan (or he is not all knowing). It's one thing to believe in God - another to believe in an interventionist God. |
No. That's where you're wrong. God did not "create" evil. Man created evil, by turning from God. God ALLOWED evil to exist, because He gave us free will. But man managed to mess it up all on his own, without God's interference. Evil was never part of God's original plan. |
And now that humans messed up God's plan, there is nothing God can do to change it. Thus, good people occasionally get cancer. Bad people get cancer too. God is not involved either way. God only doe good things, like occasionally answer prayer. |
Humans did mess up God's plan and God did everything to change it. He sent us Jesus Christ to redeem our evil, and with Him, the promise of eternal life. The rest is just details. |
| It might be good to have an adult attitude toward difficult subjects like this. To ask why God "gives" someone cancer is childish and petulant. We all die. I don't know why some people die in some ways and why others die in other ways. We are not promised any amount of time. I'm grateful for the time I've been graced with, but I've also been an incredibly lousy human being at times in my life, so I don't deserve anything other than less than what I've had. But we don't get cancer or anything else just because we've been bad. Jesus said that God "makes it rain on the just and the unjust" (Matthew 5:44). But what we HAVE been promised is eternal life if we will put our trust in Christ, and eternal, conscious death if we don't. We've corrupted God's original creation by our own actions, but no, God is NOT powerless to do anything about it. In fact, He did a lot about it: He came to Earth to die on a cross for your sins and reconcile you to Himself eternally. It's just that he did something about what we did to creation in a way that doesn't make some people happy. All He's asked is to put your faith in Him, and all will be made right someday. It's not too bad a deal. |
Like the detail that if you don't believe in Christ, you suffer in hell for eternity -- compliments of your loving God Some people never even get the chance to believe in Christ. They were raised in a different culture and never heard of him their whole lives. Will of god, just like who gets cancer and who doesn't. |
God sent the Way. It's up to you to choose to follow the path. And instead of worrying about all of these people who never hear the Truth, why don't you worry about yourself, who has obviously heard it but rejected it? |
| Can you argumentative people start a spin-off thread, and let this one stand as a place for thoughts and prayers for an individual dealing with cancer? |
God not revealing himself to a large portion of humanity thus dooming them to hell is part of his plan which is folly to question or worry about. Think about yourself instead. |
| I pray that she has the strength she needs to endure her treatments. I pray she finds comfort from prayers of her friends. I pray she receives warmth from the care of family and friends. I pray she has the resolve to accept this hardship as part of her journey in humanity. I pray for her healing here on earth and her grace to see God's purpose for her life. |
