We have it because DH uses a SW credit card for his business--lots of expenses reimbursed by clients.

How much do you need to charge to get this?

I'm the poster who got it in March.
We opened the two credit cards in January, both under same name. They each had 50,000 points sign up bonus when you spend $2,000 within the first 3 months. (Easy) one of the cards, however, only gives you the 50,000 bonus points if you have a referral from a current card member. (Otherwise it's 25,000 points)

We got the 100,000 bonus points in 2 months, which is actually 104,000, since you also get a point per dollar spent. Getting the remaining 6,000 points was easy, (southwest travel) and we got companion pass status mid March. We have been enjoying it since then and have it until December 2017.

The best way to maximize your companion pass is to accumulate the points at the beginning of the year since the pass is good for the remainder of the year and one more additional calendar year. Easiest way is through their two credit cards and southwest travel combined. Note: all 110,000 points MUST be accumulated in the same calendar year in order to qualify for companion pass status. Any miles accumulated in 2016 do not qualify towards companion pass status points, bUT, can be used to purchase flights once you do have companion pass.

I called and asked and they said no. Do you put the credit cards in the same person name or each spouse?

If you call and ask, yes they will say no. We applied for one online, and then immediately called and applied for the second one.

Did you do both in the same person or separate people?

Yes, both accounts under same name so that you can get bonus points.
Added DH as authorized user so that we could hit bonus quickly.

Op here. You need 110,000 points.

All 110,000 points need to be accumulated in the same calendar year. This is a good time to open up the credit cards
