I have a Lucy. She was supposed to have another name, but her last trimester was scary and dangerous for us both, so her sweet, gentle name no longer seemed right. I'm not sure why I associated the name Lucy with a feisty fighter, but I did. And now that she is here and growing up, she lives up to my in utero image of her. This kid is a stubborn fighter-- in a good way.

So. Not sure if Lucy has that association in general, but it does for me.

One of the characters in Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is named Lucy - she's known as Lucy the Brave.

Civil rights leaders would be especially good -- like Harriet or Rosa.

Claudette Colvin was a teenager when she refused to move on a Montgomery Bus. She started the movement even before Parks. http://www.montgomeryboycott.com/claudette-colvin/

We went through something similar and went with Penelope. She's our lucky Penny.

Lucy also means Light. Which I love. She is absolutely that. The light at the end of a long, tough pregnancy. And the light of our life.

What about naming her after one of the first black girls attending white schools in the desegregated south such as one of the Little Rock Nine (Elizabeth, Carlotta, Minnijean, Gloria, Thelma, Melba) or Ruby Bridges in New Orleans? There are some beautiful names in the group, and they were all remarkable in their courage and strength.

I just had a baby girl with a very similar story/background. We wanted a name evoking strength also and ended up inspired by strength and permanence in nature - trees, mountains, etc and went with one of those. Her middle name is Eve, for life.

Philomena - " lover of strength" and patron saint of impossible causes, and of babies and children

Anselma - "with divine protection"

Theodora - "gift of god"

Hannah - " god has favored me with a child" - lots of variants here

Andrea, Bridget, Valentina - "strong"

Lenna - "strong as a lion"

Bernadette - "brave as a bear"

Michael is the patron saint of warriors. You could do a feminine version of the name.
