Explain to me the steps toward a divorce

To what degree would getting a job right before the divorce hurt her in terms of child support and alimony, particularly if the job doesn't pay well and really set you up to live in her own? I don't know the answer, but I could envision her losing some of the "credit" for staying home even though she will still have her earnings diminished by her time staying at home.

It won't affect child support. Alimony is rarely awarded and if this is a middle class family forget it. If she worked before she can and will have to work now. You can't not work to try to game the court- if you're choosing to divorce you have to accept that means working to support your family now. Op needs a job asap if she wants to divorce. I guarantee you can't maintain a cushy SAH lifestyle on child support in 99% of divorces.
