According to the Center for Immigration Studies, Arlington and Chesterfield are the only two "sanctuary counties" in Virginia.

This further confirms Fairfax is not a sanctuary county, per the most common understanding of that term.

To where?

Those schools can pick and choose which students they want.... and leave the hard cases back in the public school system. Ultimately, vouchers are a way to use tax dollars to fund religious and other private schools. The research indicates that those schools do not have better outcomes.

It's always about using the gov. money to fund certain industries.

This. Vouchers take tax $$ from public schools. Students with parents who can afford private (voucher most likely won't cover the full cost of tuition) will be the ones to leave public schools. Between the loss of funding and the loss of students of higher socioeconomic status, the threat to the public school system is very real.

FCPS is mediocrity on stilts. Hard to see how it could get worse.

Read the DCPS forum, or blogs of DC teachers. Or read about other districts, including PW or PG.

Well... let's see... I've got more than 10 years to high school. Since arlington has no plan to have enough seats for all the kids, maybe some enterprising school like Basis would like to provide the service.

Some of the state representatives are also pro charter school and also for siphoning off money to private Christian schools. Hopefully McCauliffe will stop anything crazy proposed like he did last year when book banning and charter schools came up. But if people do not speak up and stop this push toward privatization, we could very well have even less money and control over public schools.

I think people are naive to think that the federal government could not cram charters down the throats of localities. If they tied charter acceptance to ability to receive Title I funds, the states would have to cave. No one can really go without Title I funds.
Of course it runs contrary to the republican mantra of states' rights and local control, but that didn't stop them from forcing standardized testing down everyone's throats through NCLB.

And meanwhile Trump's kid will go to a swanky private just like the Obama girls. I wish these hypocrites of different stripes would just stop meddling in the public schools with their half-added ideas wholly unformed by personal experience.

I hope so. I'm pro choice, if your school is mis-managed, you should have the option to go to a school of your choice.

In a terrible school district, choice may help some students without improving public schools. In a good school district, choice may worsen schools generally.

Secondly, most FCPS schools are functioning so there's no reason for vouchers. I think most educational efforts are focused on reforming Title 1 and innercity schools. VA has been left pretty much unscathed by this wave of education reform and NCLB that's been going on for over a decade.

Virginia does have charters in some areas, not Fairfax. My kid's FCPS experience was terrible to the point that I don't think more money is going to solve any of FCPS' issues. I think we need other options here especially for those who cannot afford to move to private like my DC did this year. So many people wish they could leave this school but have said they can't homeschool, move or pay for private, so they're stuck.

I am expecting Trump and his lackeys to pull the rug from under the White trash who voted from him. Can.Not. Wait. For. It. To. Begin. Happening.

Those places know their mediocrity and are working to solve the problems. FCPS thinks it's "world-class" and keeps reinventing its many mistakes
