| WashU takes it a step further than UChicago, by not requiring an extra essay. Simply pay, and push the submit button on the Common App. |
| Work in a university and all this mailing and printing is EXPENSIVE! Want to know why your tuition is so high? It's because of all the marketing, among other things. |
I think we all know that, hence our cynicism. |
If you say you will apply for FA on the Common Application, UChicago immediately waives the application fee. |
+ 1. (Were I an admin at one of those schools, I'd say + 1 million...) |
Dorms like palaces. gyms, dining halls that look like cruise ship buffets, retreat houses that look like resorts, etc have nothing to do with it, right? |
Still? That was our experience years ago. It was so clear that all Washington and Chicago wanted to do was solicit more applications so they could boast about turning more kids down. And then a school like Washington U wants to compare itself to schools like Duke or the Ivies? What a joke. |
| Yes, good thinking. The amount of mail is definitely the way to rank schools. |
It's not a joke at all. As you yourself note, it's a very successful technique for increasing the number of applications and thereby increasing the perception of selectivity. And, as other posters have noted, increased selectivity leads to higher rankings. So why are rankings so important? Well, look in the mirror, thou, who worship at the Ivy altar. |
Whatever. The Ivies don't need to waste so much money on these annoying mailing blitzes. |
And soon neither will Chicago -- because folks like you now perceive it as on par with the golden ticket Ivies simply because it has risen in the all-powerful rankings. Eventually, the same will be true of Wash U. The admissions VPs are just playing your game. |
