It's not a joke at all.  As you yourself note, it's a very successful technique for increasing the number of applications and thereby increasing the perception of selectivity.  And, as other posters have noted, increased selectivity leads to higher rankings.  So why are rankings so important?  Well, look in the mirror, thou, who worship at the Ivy altar.          [/quote]

And soon neither will Chicago -- because folks like you now perceive it as on par with the golden ticket Ivies simply because it has risen in the all-powerful rankings.  Eventually, the same will be true of Wash U.  The admissions VPs are just playing your game.     [/quote]
