My mother is driving me crazy.

You do not need to clean before she comes or entertain her. Allowing your mom to help is a gift you can give her. Relax and let her do something for you.

Keep all calls short and sweet. Be on your way to appointments, food shopping, dropping off mail, etc. When you get those long pauses that's when you come out with "Welp I've got to go… "

Send her to my house. I have a mother that does the obligatory 'let me know if you need anything' and when I do she conviently can't because she has a hair appt or that is a day she has water aerobics. I wish I had your mom at times like this!

Maybe I'm projecting, but what I hear in the OPs post is that her mom brings anxiety to the point that the OP has to take care of the mom instead of the other way around. When my spouse was going through chemo, my mom worried whenever I didn't sound happy and chipper. She was never really asking me or offering assistance, but pushing me to sound chipper so that she felt better.

Say "What would be helpful to me is if you _____________." Try to make it sound nice.
