Maybe I'm projecting, but what I hear in the OPs post is that her mom brings anxiety to the point that the OP has to take care of the mom instead of the other way around. When my spouse was going through chemo, my mom worried whenever I didn't sound happy and chipper. She was never really asking me or offering assistance, but pushing me to sound chipper so that she felt better.
