I can't imagine what blacks across the country face where every hour of every day they face unjust scrutiny simply because of their skin color which they can't take off like a uniform and are stressed by every encounter with law enforcement by legit fear for their life.

I know several police officers in DC, Baltimore and MoCo...including African American officers. Here's what each of them has told me: it's not a racist thing, it's a fear thing. Police officers shoot when they are overcome with fear. Those who remain under control often don't even draw their weapons. Fear motivates them. Having said that, they each recognize that racial bias can prompt irrational fear. But they were quick to point out that stereotypes come from somewhere...including decades of working in areas where you know chances are the guy you are dealing with has a gun. I'm not defending the egregious police shootings we've recently witnessed via media. But I do see the point each of my five police officer friends have made: it's fear, not some purely hillbilly racist act. Remember the viral video of the white cop who was a recent war veteran and he talked down a white guy with a gun who very clearly wanted the cop to shoot him? That cop was able to control his fear...because he was a young, brave veteran who was used to high stress situations and had been trained in deescalation tactics by the military. And perhaps more importantly, he was a new cop who simply hadn't had the chance to develop a fear or bias related to the job. Honestly, I think the new training should be if you are scared then get back in your car and leave rather than shoot. Maybe the locals will develop a new appreciation for the security police bring if they dial it down a notch and people realize how out of control things get. |
And another where an officer pulled over a young black man because he didn't believe owns property in his neighborhood. This is what drives blacks bonkers and fuels distrust. There are tons of examples of this all over the internet. And when police work the 20-hour shifts to protect lives and property, it's not given acolades because of a bunch of assholes who create disharmony causing many to overlook the good. I watched this video, and it really angered me. The officer's behavior was unacceptable IMHO. http://earhustle411.com/officer-pulls-over-young-black-man-because-he-doesnt-believe-he-owns-property-in-the-neighborhood-the-black-guy-takes-him-to-his-house-to-prove-it/ |
Every hour of the day? That sounds awful. Maybe you should start a thread about it because I'm not sure it's super relevant to this one. Also, here's something that might blow your mind. Get ready. There are black people who are cops! |
And here's something that might blow your mind. Get ready. Those black people that are cops catch hell too because the uniform can come off but the skin can't. Oh wow. Jeff should really delete this whole thread. It's gross that anyone would try to appreciate the police while racism exists. |
I'm the OP. All I wanted to do was give a little shout-out to the police for their efforts in this massive storm. It doesn't mean I don't realize that a small minority of them are bad - there's been enough press and violence on that. I just feel bad for the vast majority of police who are truly heroes and thought it appropriate to recognize their efforts. But there's so much animosity that it seems one can't even say a kind word about cops without being told, angrily, that there are exceptions. Unreal. |
