The latter (in British English, in response to the PP - never heard anyone British use the former) |
Animal Farm. Hillary. Fun! |
+2 and i have a phd in it. |
Fee nance is correct pronunciation. Fi lance to those who pronounce ambulance as am-bu-LANCE |
Interestingly, I say F-eye-nance if I read the word, but when I think of someone working on wall street the voice in my head says "larlo works in corporate fennance." I think my corporate law/ibanking friends have used that pronunciation in conversations.
Could it be a regional/new York thing? |
fe nance ... Fe like a short a sound. Like finesse, you f'n cowards. |
Do you change your pronunciation based on noun vs verb? |
Both ways. Just depends on the sentence. FYI - I used to work in Finance. |
Huh, I've never, ever heard it pronounced any way other than fie-nance. |
You have this backwards. In the dictionary, the primary (preferred) pronunciation is fie-nance, used by the majority of people. The secondary pronunciation is fee-nance. This is the pronunciation preferred by those with the inveterate tendency toward being a pretentious asshole. |
My boss says fenNANCE and I hate it. |
