Why is there a half day for MCPS today?

They just had a professional day and a 3 day weekend? What the fuck.

Yes and practically a 4 day weekend this weekend. This will be their 4th day off after only being in school 22 days. Those poor overworked teachers.

My DH is an MCPS teacher. He leaves for school at 7 am. He works through lunch meeting with his students. He has meetings after school. Then, when he comes home - he grades more. Then after dinner - you know what he does? More grading and lesson planning. Over the weekend? More grading and lesson planning. He has 150 students. So spare me your sarcastic "overworked teachers" comment.

He works 200 days max a year. He has 150+ days off. So spare me your overworked teachers comment.

You think he is just relaxing during weekends and holidays? Do you know how many times we are on car road trips where I drive an he is grading? Yes - he gets the summer off (which again - he spends some of it lesson planning for the upcoming year), but I think it is well deserved. Teachers are so under appreciated!

I work 50hrs a week AND work from home after I put my kids asleep. I also have zero vacation time or holidays off. I get Christmas, New Years, and Christmas. I usually go into my office on Saturday mornings to catch up. Most people these days do not work 8hrs a day.

Are you telling me he spends every holiday and weekend working? Even the summer? Give me a break.

+1 teacher hours extend long before and after the paid work day. People who don't know a teacher intimately don't understand that. Your husband is making a difference. Thank him for me.

Sadly, so many public servants (teachers, nurses, etc) are not appreciated.

No. That's not what I said. The person above me said that teachers have 150+ days off. I am saying that is untrue. He does work almost every weekend. And he does work over T-giving, winter break and spring break. Yes, he does have the summer off. But I think that it is well deserved considering how much he works over the school year.

All these closures don't really have that much to do with teacher-prep.

Sept 5 - Labor Day
Sept 12 - Eid (Muslim holiday)
Today - Teacher prep?
Monday - Rosh Hashanah

They have school on Columbus day and then they are off on a Wednesday for Yom Kippur

Didn't you realize that professional development days and work days are just that... WORK days?

Public servants like nurses, police, firefighters work year round, all hours, all holiday protecting you and saving lives. I would not put a teacher's job in the same level. I appreciate them but when I hear about their need for professional days, their complaints of salary of 180 day work days, and wanting more days off, it gets really hard to support them. My child's in 2nd grade and twice this week her math homework had errors. 200 + __ + 6 = 136. Sorry but that is not acceptable.

Most teachers "work" from home. Most other families have to take a day off from their job so they can work from home.

Sept 12th was a professional work day. Not Eid, at least according to the MCPS calendar.

Teachers are underappreciated partly because they don't have as much a workload as other professions, and partly because they are grossly underpaid for what they do, which is forming children's minds.

I hope the bolded above is a typo.

Why? Do you honestly think teachers have the same workload as others who work 40+hr work weeks, 52 weeks a year.

+1000

No one ever forced them to become teachers.
