Have you heard of SWW and Banneker? DCI can only hope to be about 5th best...in a city with pretty weak high schools. Dream big!

Yes, Here's the problem:

SWW has quota-based admissions, and doesn't offer an IB Diploma. Banneker isn't diverse.

These aren't good enough for us.

I def wouldn't put DCI ahead of Hardy or SH for middle quite yet. I also wouldn't put it above SWW, Banneker.

I would say right now DCI would be similar to TR, ITS, Haynes, Cap City for middle and Haynes, McKinley, and Cap City for high school.

Lots of charters ahead of DCI in terms of test scores. They have just their first class of 9th graders now. http://www.dcpcsb.org/evaluating/parcc

I think the updated DCPCSB Tier Ratings - which will come out in November - will help answer these questions. In addition to PARCC scores, the Tier ratings take attrition and rate of individual student growth year over year into account.

DCI's only 2 years old though, right? And doesn't even have it's permanent facility? Yet it's already more desirable among a certain set of families than the local and traditional offerings.

The bodes well for the school, but the envious are definitely going to come it at.

So excited to hear! This is what community determination can do. Lots of parents got involved to spearhead reaching out. And it worked! Kudos!!!

How do you determine "more desirable"?

The reality is DCI is going to be really hard for non-feeder school students to get into unless

a) significant numbers of students from its feeder schools don't enroll for 6th

or

b) significant numbers of students from DCI middle choose not to attend for high school

At this point they have fewer middle seats for new applicants than Hardy OOB, Latin or BASIS.

Doesn't DCI already have students who are IB for Hardy and SH and Deal?

Not that many (see page 43 http://www.dcpcsb.org/sites/default/files/Choosing%20Quality%20Report_0.pdf ) but not sure what you think that indicates.

I'm sure. Doesn't mean DCI is a better school, just means that the family has different values. I am IB for Deal but sticking with our charter through 8th for personal preferences as well. Doesn't mean I think that overall my current Charter is better than Deal.

Yes. I know IB families for Deal and Hardy at DCI

My kid is still really young, and in a DCI feeder. I say give it a couple years -- why are people poo-pooing already? Isn't setting up a new school hard? In terms of why people would choose DCI over other tested options, I would say the community is one reason. I know so many awesome parents from other feeders and I'm excited to have the opportunity to be in the same school community at DCI.

Doesn't work in this case. DCI is 53% FARMS, 20% Spec Education and very diverse racially and ethnically:

33% AA
42% Latino
13% White
4% Asian
6% Multiracial
