It said that there are two types of pigment, one for brown and one for red. I'm guessing that your brown pigment is fading away with age, but your red isn't, so you're not going grey, you're getting more red. Like how leaves turn color in fall.

Op here. Thanks for such a nice metaphor! I like it! It might be connected to melanin, or my lack of melanin....

Here's the article. Not a scientific journal or anything, but there's random red hair in my family (including my younger brother's lumberjack style beard) so I thought it was interesting.

Thank you so much for this article! That explains so much. Some of that might be why my mom kept going on and on that I am just like my great grandma, who was a redhead, and I thought my mom was imagining things. This pheomelanin that seems to be more present in type I skin also might explain why I have skin cancer(removed and all clear right now, luckily) and burn, never tan skin, like I mentioned. I just did some more research and there are theories that pheomelanin might actually contribute to UV skin damage. Thanks again, I didn't even know until now about this pheomelanin. And my DS will not allow me at all to say it out loud, he is a teen, but his brown hair is kind of auburn in the summer, to be honest probably because he spends a lot of time in the sun.

I find it amusing that so many people dislike their reddish/auburn hair. Mine is and I love it. My MIL has lots of warmth in her hair too, however colors hers in cool/dark brown because she is afraid she will look like Mexican (!!!!???). I thought it was really strange!

How would that make her look like a Mexican? What the? I think Latinas have gorgeous hair, so full and with almost a midnight blue black shade to it. But as for people disliking red hair, it is true in some cases. My daughter decided to lighten her already blond hair, it turned orange and she completely freaked out. Though that might be because she didn't want orange hair, and already had nice hair, so...

My light blonde hair has turned red. People say now I'm strawberry blonde or a redhead. My dark blue eyes have turned pale blue.

I too am turning red. It started with my beard and mustache. Now my hair and eyebrows are turning red. My skin has always been light and freckled, burning easy, almost lightly tanning. 33 and turning red all over. My irish genes taking over. haha

Yes, happened to me. I started getting those semi-perm colorings that wash out over 3 weeks or so.

I have pale skin that freckles and moles easily in sun, my brown hair used to only look like there were reds in it in the sunlight- but now the hair on my head and arms is lightening so much that strands look gold/red. They are really shiny too, like I almost thought they were going silver in the wrong light. I’m late twenties. The only thing different I’ve done is move, the water here is soft water and I’ve grown up on hard water. I’m also pretty iron deficient so maybe it’s not the external factor of the water change, but the internal? My sun exposure is about the same as it’s always been. I do have Irish in my ancestry but maybe lacking certain vitamins/ minerals in my life as I get older (mixed with different stressors) is causing this change and the recessive genes are popping through?

Ugh. I hate red hair.

It’s sun damaged hair, OP. I get it, too, only mine is a brassy red-gold color. If it really bothered me I would use a sunscreen spray, but that’s all it is. Sun damage.

My hair used to be almost black and and now it is a lot more brown.

No one gives a shit what you think.

My DC's eyes change colors over time too. But again in the opposite direction of yours.

In any case, your genetic markers are probably in the red head family, which is a wild and strange mix where anything can happen.

Same here - I hit 40 and my red hair gradually turned to sh*t brown. I'm sitting waiting for the L'Oreal to take so that I can feel like myself again. Those of you who are going in the opposite direction, you're lucky!

Not really. Why would we not want our, as you call it, “sh*t brown” hair? I loved my deep brown color and wish it weren’t turning this brassy gold.

My hair was a dirty blonde until I went to school. It was a deeper warm brown with some golden bits in the front in my 20s. I’m 34 now and the past few years my husband has been finding red/orange hairs on my head. They are really thick and feel different from my smooth brown hair. I have no gray hair yet.

Same with me but my mom and brother have red hair. People ask me where I got my highlights and I say genetics.

Ah, I think that is going on with me. I was wondering where the copper came from, my hair was ash brown. I have a fair amount of gray, so it makes sense that the copper strands are on their way to gray.
