When should a boy know how to stand up to pee?

Anonymous
My kids sat until about age 4 or 5, when they consistently started standing to pee.

It was way easier to teach them sitting down for pee and poop, so they both were training sitting down. Also agree that it's less messy. Even my older boy still has issues with aim sometimes!

Never an issue at school. By pre-K they mostly let the kids go by themselves. How does the teacher even know if he's sitting? And, even so, who cares if he is. She should be happy that it's simpler.

Around 3, DS started standing after seeing his classmates do it. We called it the drunken pee because he leaned over the toilet holding onto the back. It worked out really well actually, never had a problem having to clean up the pee. He's a couple months shy of 4 now and he's recently started to hold his penis while peeing. Generally pretty good with the aim too (thank god)

My boys have always peed standing up. Never did it sitting down.

I have no interest in cleaning my bathroom floor that thoroughly 5x/day.

Huh? My 2 yr old has been potty trained for 2 weeks and stands. "Turn the water yellow!" Not that complicated.

Well, you earn a urine colored star. Report back to us when your DC hits elementary school.

My kids were potty trained before 2 but weren't tall enough to pee standing up until 3, and not comfortable doing it until elementary school. Before that, it was occasional.

When he starts cleaning the bathroom.

Sit down until they're old enough to hit the target and not make a mess. I don't care if they're a sixty year old man. If they still make a mess they sit down.

I have an older kid too. He sat for the first 6 months but has never had this issue, either.

Never!? Did you potty train at 4?!

OP, my DS potty trained at 20 months and didn't stand up until he was tall enough, which was probably about 4. He did not want to stand on a stool because he fell off while sleepy a few times

PP here. We potty trained at 2.75. DS started preschool at 2.5 and he was the one who asked us for underwear after seeing another boy wearing underwear. I think he though diapers were for babies and he was in big boy school now.

I wish someone would tell my FIL this. Our bathrooms start to reek like a bus station restroom after he's been at our house for a day.

A friend's son does the drunken pee, too - and he's pretty good at keeping it in the potty. I would have thought you were her, but her son is a different age.

My son - his aim is terrible. He prefers to sit and I'm pretty cool with that. DH doesn't encourage him to stand, either.

My son just started the summer before Kindergarten. Learned it at camp where the potties were lower to the ground for young children. Unfortunately, our potties are adult sized. We are now cleaning messes we never had to deal with before. Ugh. He is getting better but since he is on the smaller side its just tough for him to do it perfectly. A few more inches and he will have a much better angle.

Another poster earning a "urine colored star". My now almost 6 year old only pees sitting down when he has to poo. We used the cheerio/frootloop method with a step stool when necessary and rarely have "misses". Never occurred to me to not teach a boy how to pee standing up.
