Are all centers chaotic to some extent?

I would not describe our center as chaotic. It can certainly be noisy--it's full of little kids, after all! The only time I'd even think of the word is when the kids are playing in the indoor playroom, in which case it's like a popcorn popper of kids. But the teachers are supervising, and the kids are playing. They're supposed to run around and play in the playroom. It never seems like they are out of control, just blowing off steam.

And 24 two-year-olds in one room is bonkers. Our center doesn't even allow that many three- or four-year-olds in the same room.

OP here - Thank you, all! SUPER helpful commentary!

Unfortunately the legal ratio in Virginia is 1:8 for 2 year olds, so I think this is what we will continue to find at centers around here. I'm looking in the Springfield area if anyone happens to have any awesome recommendations in Springfield/Annandale/Burke.

I think my current plan (unless I find a magic center) is to wait another year and let him have the calmness of our current home daycare situation while he matures a little bit more emotionally. Next fall, when he's 3, we'll have a lot more options for care and can pick something more structured and calm for him.

With more kids than an in-home daycare, it is going to be more chaotic. But 24 kids in a room together is a LOT. My kid is in a preschool where there are 12 kids in his class with 2 teachers. My older kid was in a different preschool with 18 kids in a class and 3 teachers. I can't imagine 24! I'm not even sure that fits the regulations... I thought 18 or 20 was max?

I would look for a smaller group setting if your child is sensitive to this sort of thing (my younger one is). The smaller group setting with 12 kids has been great for him. There is some chaos, but it's never out of control, the teachers are never yelling, and it's never terribly loud.

You can search for daycares by zip code on the VA DSS site and read inspection reports, complaints, etc. This may help weed out the more chaotic ones to find gems.
