New USNEWS Rankings - Virginia back in the Top 25!

Sour grapes much? UVA is on a roll. And Business Insider just named it no. 1 public in the nation, over UCLA, Berkeley and Michigan and no. 9 overall in the nation including privates. http://www.businessinsider.com/best-public-colleges-in-the-united-states-2016-8. DD just started there and could NOT be happier. A perfect fit. My wallet is also grateful.

UChicago at 20. LOL. *closes browser tab*

Yeah, USC at 10....hahahahahahahaha

That College Niche ranking is based on "overall" experience so it's going to favor schools in nice climates with a "fun" environment. My DD can have fun for less than 60K per year. That said, USC is the highest ranked large school in the USNEWS rankings, so it is natuarally going to be high in any ranking of overall experience.

U of Chicago fan will enjoy the new USNEWS rankings - UC is at #3 http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities

Not sure why UC does so poorly in overall experience. Maybe the students just aren't happy there.

The thing that caught my eye is Brown and WashU dropping. Chicago is now Top 3 - Stanford fell a bit.

Everyone predicted UChicago would go to #3. They're gunning for #1. I believe they were #1 back 80-100 years ago.

And that totally changes your opinion of those schools, right?

"totally?" NO.

USNEWS rankings remain the gold standard, but they are just one data point. The rankings are easily accessible and, as such, get embedded in the psyche around the globe. In China there is an absolute obsession with the USNEWS rankings. In American most everyone pretends they don't care about USNEWS rankings, but they do (at least a bit). Schools certainly care - some more than others. But does anyone base their opinion "totally" on the rankings? Highly doubtful.

Pretty impressive, especially given the location of UC in the south side of Chicago.

These rankings do not emphasize academic research and reputation. U.S. News and World Report has a separate "Best Global Universities" for academic research and reputation (and there are other publications that ranks based on research. Large state universities do much better in those rankings – Berkely is #1 globally http://www.laweekly.com/news/us-news-and-world-report-says-ucla-is-a-top-10-global-university-5177121
U.S. News & World Report admits that its well-known national rankings are based more on student education and outcome while the global evaluations rely more on "academic research and reputation."

U of Chicago is gaming the system like no other. It's pretty shameless.

hah. I'll tell you what. DH and I both went to UChicago and did well BUT if I had gotten into HYP or Stanford (I didn't even apply) I would have gone to one of those in a heartbeat. No question.
