Does anyone in the NYC/Boston/Chicago/California care about Vanderbilt?

Yeah, not sure what that comment is intended to mean, but in Chicago, it's well known if you need an accountant, engineer, or computer scientist, you hire from Illinois. They've had top 5 programs for decades.

No Also too expensive for what you get.

I grew up in Chicago and DC and have lived in the Pacific Northwest, California, and Texas. Vanderbilt is considered a good school with a national recognition all over. Of course there are regional biases and Northwestern and UIUC tend to dominate Chicago, UT and Rice tend to dominate Texas, the UC schools (especially Berkeley and UCLA) tend to dominate in California, etc. in terms of what is considered a "good school," but overall I think one would be fine in any large metro area with a degree from Vanderbilt.

What is UIUC?

Outside of a very few schools in the country, no one outside of a region really cares.

In CA or the Midwest, no one's going to look down on you for having a degree from Vanderbilt, but it's not going to be a plus either (not a big network, or a pipeline/well-known track record wrt hires in a particular field, or sufficiently prestigious to make you an impressive candidate if you aren't otherwise).

What is UIUC?

NP. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the flagship state U. They make the distinction in Chicago because some go to UIC, University of Illinois at Chicago.

I'd say GW and USC (in LA) are more-so known for that.

True but Vandy for southerners. Wake Forest falls into this category as well.

Uh, Vanderbilt IS a top 20 university. Ranked the same as WUSTL and Cornell.
