I with my family will be soon visiting Africa, on business trip. We are soon expecting a new family member to join us, who would possibly be born in Africa. And we want to give our baby an African name so that he can easily mix up and make friends easily. I am finding little difficult to find. Please help.

You might be having a hard time because you are the only person in the world who doesn't realize that Africa is a continent, not a country. There is no such thing as an "African" baby name, you dolt.

I can find nothing in OPs post that indicates that s/he doesn't realize "that Africa is a continent". If the name in question is selected from ANY country in African, then is it not an African name?!

I am from NYC and I have an African name. When people inquire about my name I simply say it's African and tell them the meaning. Not once in 48 years has someone asked me which country specifically.

Sheesh!

OP, how about naming your LO after a city or a place? Niles or Sahara?

I do not understand what OP is getting at. OP, are you saying that you might have a baby while you are visiting an African country? Or are you hinting that you are adopting a child from an African country? This is the special concerns forum, so I am guessing it is the latter. If you are adopting a child, the child will already have a name from whatever African country the child is born in. Why would you need to find a new one?

I'm thinking you are the name calling poster above as well. I'm confused why the lack of civil discourse is necessary here. I was merely pointing out that there is, in fact, a such thing as an "African baby name". If you are a parent, I pray you are not teaching your children to spew such vitriolic poison into the world. It is really bizarre that not once, but twice, you have name called on a thread about naming a baby! I will keep you in my thoughts because clearly you need professional help.

I am curious why you tell them your name is African, rather than just saying what culture or language it comes from. When someone asks what kind of name Siobhan or Svetlana are, don't most people reply Irish or Russian, not European? DD has a name from the African country where her father was born. When asked, I say the country, not the continent. It would never occur to me to say the continent.

Because so many people have no idea what countries are in Africa outside of the very common ones. Plus, I'm pretty sure that 70% of the time the person asking is less interested in the specific country of origin and thinking more along the lines that it is a made up name and waiting to hear some wild story of how my parents came up with it. I'm AA and I get that a lot.

I am AA too, and I understand that people think some names are made up names or don't know African countries. I hear a lot of "oh that's an interesting name," or "Oh I have never heard of that name before,." That is part of why I specifically say the country and/or language. It might help the person learn something. Plus, I am sure there are many people who will hear "it's an African name," and still think it is something that AA parents made up, or that they heard somewhere, but don't really know whee it comes from.

I'm West African and when AAs tell me their name is "African" instead of specifying the country, I assume they are ignorant or that their parents did indeed make up the name and just happened to stumble upon a spelling that matched an African one. Imagine if someone named Siobhan said their name was "European." It would be odd and lead people to assume they are ignorant of the specific origins of their own name. Just an FYI.

Well, naturally I wouldn't say "African" to someone who is actually from the continent. I also wouldn't say that to someone who I knew was familiar with the countries, which many Americans are not...not even close. You stated you are West African, instead of stating you are from Sierra Leone or any other West African country. I don't see much difference in what you did there from what I generally do. Just FYI.

I lived in East Africa as a child and most of our African friends had Western first names. They also had specific second names based on their tribes and traditions. OP's child would not be out of place with a standard American name.

PP is talking about the region she is from and it is not in response to a direct question about her origins. When you get asked a specific question about origins and can only give a continent, people assume you are ignorant.

I don't understand if OP is giving birth in Africa, or adopting an African child who will move back to the US? You can name your kid whatever you want. There are lists of names. It's not that hard.

Latrine is another great African girl's name, OP. How about Dengue for a boy? Jaundice is a unisex name.

Let me guess, your first name is Idiot.

This is my question too. If the child is from that country/culture, it makes a lot more sense to use a traditional name from that country. If she's going there and having a white american ex pat baby ... that makes less sense.
