Guys, planning periods for teachers are really important. This isn't what we want our kids' teachers cutting corners on.

Asked my teen if he'd heard about this while driving with him last night. His response, delivered dryly, "I wonder what they're gonna cut."

Cutting planning time for teachers doesn't get you more instructional days between Labor Day and June 15th, which is what we would need.

Cutting the 4 Teacher Work days before grades are due would. You could make them all 2 hour early dismissals and add 8 more 2 hour early dismissal days. Early dismissal days = full days of school for state purposes. Teachers would still get most of that planning time (as long as no one made them attend a meeting.) Many schools have early dismissal one day per week.

School Schedule in Finland--I don't know where you get this year round school in Europe BS from--they do NOT have year round school in most EU countries. Only in America do we cater to people who can't afford alternative forms of child care in the summer:

You gave an example of FI, so I'll give an example of the UK.

UK has effectively year round school. Their summer doesn't start until last week of July. They go back first week of Sept. They usually get six weeks in the summer, and one week in between quarters. Plus they have two weeks for xmas and spring break. Their school sessions are basically about six weeks per quarter, with a break in between.
