At age 5, after I would ask my son to put on his shoes, I swear 50 percent of the time he would leave he room and come back without some or all of his clothes on. What on earth would go through his head to get from put on shoes to take off clothes, I will never know. So at that age it is best to ask and then watch carefully. As some has said, you sort of need o escort them to the shoes.

If you allow screen time, my husband started a rule that my son had 10 minutes to get dressed and put shoes on and any remaining time he was allowed to use a screen. It is amazing how fast and focused he became.
