Can you buy a car with credit card?

Anonymous
At my kid's college, they actually charge the 2-3% extra fee if you use a credit card to pay the bill. It makes sense because that fee would have to be subsidized by everyone else who is paying tuition/room and board. We pay by directly transferring money from our bank account (which they make easy to do). I'm sure they also take checks.

When you use a credit card, the business has to get that money somewhere else (higher price on the car,etc.).

And you think they are selling cars and lose money?

dealers don't charge extra fees for using credit card up to set amount (e.g., 2k, 5k or so) by the dealer.

I think most everyone here is talking about charging the large amount for the points/miles, then paying it off immediately.

obviously. the previous poster who thought folks want to carry the balance must be nuts.

If this was allowed, many people would do this. Most people don't have thousands sitting around to pay off a car they bought on a credit card. Most people do not have the money to pay off their credit card each money.

Which is why many people finance a car. Why would you finance on a credit card for 18% interest when you can get a loan for well under 5%?

Who can get a loan for that rate? There are many people with crappy credit that can't get any loan so a credit card with a high rate is the best they can do. Now I know none of this applies to anyone on DCUMs but this is Fantasyland.

Exactly, you would never finance at 18% -- you would use your credit card solely to get as many points/miles as you can (whether thats 2000, 3000 or 5000 -- wouldn't be the full purchase price of the car obviously), and then you would pay that off immediately. I pay good money ($95) for my United miles credit card so I want to be able to use it as much as possible. never carried a balance in my life but have taken a free trip to the UK because of my miles/points. If I could pay my mortgage on it, I would.

I know one dealership that charges that 2-3% back to you, the customer. I guess under certain situations this may be preferable, but I think that would be the exception.

I put $5,000 down on a car about 4 years ago. It was my limit at the time. I had the money in savings for the car but wanted to get the cash back for using the card. When I got the bill I paid it off.

Yes, I bought a new car earlier this year with a credit card. I actually had to put it on 2 cards because the limit on the first one wasn't high enough. I did this for the points and paid the bill off a couple of weeks later. Most of the dealers I corresponded with wouldn't take credit cards though. The dealer I chose allowed credit card purchases and was able to match the lowest quote I'd received from another local dealer.

you can and do not take no for an answer. Most people go into a dealership intimidated and will only ask and when told no for anything they back down.

Push back and get what you want

We put a $3k deposit down on a CC last week for a new car, then paid for the rest of the car w/personal check. I'm excited about the points--we earn 2 points/dollar on our card (Cap One) so that means that we earned 6k points. While in reality the $$ value of 6k points is only $60 worth of rewards, its better than making *no* points from this transaction.

And if you pay cash, ask for a discount.

Darcars in Rockville let us put the whole thing on Amex. Got 2 free tickets to Europe with the miles. It wasn't part of the negotiation for the price. We just asked when we were paying and they said yes but only for Amex. This was a few years ago.
