Because kids need stuff like crayons and paper and scissors to do their school work. What's so hard to understand?

Our list has brand names for everything, but it's really just a list of what's included in the school supply pack you can buy via the PTA. I buy generic brands for most things. It's fine (& cheaper).

Ridiculous! I've never bought $15 pens in my life!

15 dollar pens for kindergartners has nothing to do with the quality of education.

Kindergarteners don't use pens, and I have never seen one on the supply list.

I'm guessing these are either Expo dry erase markers or Sharpies, neither of which would actually be used by the kids, so I wouldn't buy them.

Ds's list was all name brands (every item) and included a special set of pens that cost $15 (?!?) dollars. For kindergarten.

Ok. Vent over.

Our school is not title 1 and I've never seen brand names on a supplies list. very odd

I would NOT spend $15 on pens. They get what they get, especially in K! I'd question that practice, btw.

This. I understand the brand name crayons. Not pens in kindergarten.

I am a teacher and I think this practice at OP's school is ridiculous. Supplies get expensive as you move up. However, that doesn't mean you have to purchase brand names, especially in K.

FWIW, I'd rather spend a few dollars on cleaning supplies - like wipes, especially during the winter months when germs are flying around.

Ours does for a few things - namely glue and crayons, which I understand. The cheap crayons are not the same quality as crayola. But not for something like Pens.

Right -- but why is each family buying supplies? It's really inefficient. Where I grew up, the supplies were part of the school's budget.

because the budgets have been cut to the bone. The schools to not supply them anymore. So, buying supplies reduces your taxes.

They specify name brands?! Jeez and I was complaining about our Montessori school supplies that so far have totaled to about $50.

Guys they aren't forcing you to buy the name brand. They put the name brand on there so you know what type they need. If they put "soft tip fine point marker pen for writing" you would be like "wtf?" They say Sharpie, you get it and can then get the generic version if you want.

The best schools have the best supplies, if you can't afford it go to a lower rated school
