It's less the act of chewing and more the sound. If you smack your lips each time you bite down, that gets really obnoxious. Chewing with your mouth open means I can hear every noisy, wet, moist sound you make.
If you pop or snap the gum intermittently, it startles me each time. I'm deep in concentration, you know, doing my work, and hearing this loud POP pulls me out of it. Just chew quietly and discretely and you're fine. |

Holy overreaction, Batman! |
I will leave a store if the clerk is cracking gum |
Is it hard to walk with that stick up your ass? |
| While I was in painful labor with my first-born, my nurse was chewing gum. I politely told her that this was a huge distraction to me as I was trying to relax. |
| I cannot have gum with anyone else around because I LOVE to snap it and cannot stop. I love the sound and it's so satisfying but so trashy. |
| Going to get flamed for this, but I’ve noticed the greatest offenders of incessant “chew popping” in the DMV are WOC. |
| People chewing gum doesn't bother me. People disposing of their gum anywhere but a trash can (ex. Furniture, railing, sidewalk, etc.), I find extremely offensive. |
