US giving grants to the Middle East?

Are you not familiar with recent political developments? US bombed and financially supported deposition of Khadafy, and while he was a dictator, the country was stable. With the US help the country is now "run" by radicals, Isis groups are running rampant and there are hundreds of militias doing whatever they want. Weapons from Khadafy's arsenal are used by the whole region, by terrorists, including Boko Haram. Way to go USA. |

Of course, but Gaddafi was a vicious dictator who basically crushed any opposition to him and didn't exactly "build" stable institutions of society and government in Libya. He ruled for 42 years and he's been dead for 5. The sh*t storm that is the Middle East was caused by George W. invading Iraq. That got us into Afghanistan as well and de-stabilized Syria. Yeah, in comparison, ISIS makes Assad look good. When dictators like Saddam and Gaddafi fall what do you expect to fill the vacuum other than chaos? So if you don't want relatively stable Middle Eastern countries go the way of Libya, Iraq, Syria, then grants that help build and support societies are a good thing. |

This isn't a grant TO a foreign government. It's a grant to a (likely) US-based organization to support specific objectives in the developing world.
Newsflash: Both major US parties support international assistance. It's part of both platforms. |

Not sure to whom you're responding, but I know what MEPI does, and yes you are correct, grantees aren't governments, however, grantees would't be in given to a grantee that didn't have diplomatic relations with the U.S. But it also can't give grants were there isn't some stability already. |

| Simple question to all advocating US giving grants to other countries. If you yourself owe 50K on credit cards, do you go and borrow 20K to give to somebody else? Friend, homeless person, family? |
