Norway with a stop over in Iceland. Drobak is a town outside of Oslo where Santa lives.

Would go with Bavaria or Austria as well - Switzerland is pretty but much more expensive. Avoid England - less Christmas cheer there than the States - contrary to Dickens!

Another vote for Austria. Innsbruck, Salzburg, Vienna. So much to see, and walking around in the Christmas markets really is wonderful.

Sweden and Norway are cold in the winter + little or no sun as you go north. Skiing places are a dime a dozen. My family favorite, Fulpmes in Austria. There's a smallish (by Austrian standards) hill in the town and there are buses to the Stubai Glacier, a big mountain.

Pros: reachable by Tram for Innesbruck, not expensive, lovely place.

Cons: no nightlife, nothing fancy. Weather is warmer, lots of festivity, very lively place. Many AirBnB rentals.

Me: I'd go to Seville. Malaga is only 2 hours away by train.

Another "con" for Great Britain is Boxing Day--the day after Christmas. Christmas is a two day holiday and lots of places are likely to be closed.

If you happen to be Catholic OP -- it's wonderful to go to Rome and go to the Vatican. Thousands of people from all over the world go. It's pretty magical.

No to Sweden and Norway for sure. Dark, depressing.

Is this even a question? Christmas markets in Bavaria!

Only go to Scandinavia if you want to freeze in complete darkness and hang with the most depressed people on the planet..

I'd never consider it outside summer.

OP,

When are you going at Christmas? Will most of the trip be before or after Christmas? How long will you be there?

I LOVE the Christmas markets--but, if I recall correctly, they are not open after Christmas. I would consider Salzburg before Christmas and Rome after--unless you want to be there Christmas Day.

Op here- thanks for all the ideas. We are leaning towards 5 days in the uk right before Christmas and leaving on Boxing Day and then going to Normandy. or Greece. Still open to ideas though. We have already done , Portugal, southern Spain, Rome and Tuscany and Vienna around Christmas in past years.
