Ideas to make third grader more independent

Any chance she can either walk to the school bus or to school herself this year? Start practicing by having her walk YOU places. That way you'll feel comfortable that she both knows her way and can get across streets without being mowed down.

What does she want to learn how to cook? Can she use the microwave? Does she have some knife skills already? If not, start there! Scrambled eggs (even in the microwave), toast, etc are good places to start if she doesn't have an idea. Maybe a grilled cheese sandwich or toasted cheese in the toaster oven.

Put her in charge of the recycling or at least bringing in the bins.

As you start to get organized for school this fall, ask her what her plan is to accomplish X. Make her think it through and then walk her through the plan. It takes some of the planning responsibility out of her hands.

Ask her what she wants to learn how to do without you! Her ideas might surprise you, but they'll give you a place to start.

8 years old is just a kid, geez. Focus on social independence and letting her learn to structure her own fun with her friends.
