For swim, you need to find the right place. I suggest starting at age 3-4 because kids need to know how to swim. It is a life skill. We love Swimkids - classes are small. The county classes were a disaster for a kid who doesn't like the water.
Gymnastics is great if you can afford it. It is a true luxury. At age 3, you can get the same skills at a playground. My son started gymnastics at age 5 and has progressed quickly. If the kids is a decent athlete, they will be fine. |
My low tone DS really improved with once a week gymnastics classes . He got much stronger, better balance, it was basically PT for him. He went from a terrible athlete to a bad-to-normal athlete, will never be a decent athlete, but got much better. |
The county classes are hit or miss. Like anywhere, it depends on the instructor. The hard part is they change instructors each session so the kid likes one and it is abruptly switched. We've had mixed results with county but its worth doing as its cheap. Dobre Gymnastics is $70 a month which is much more affordable than several other of the studios. County also has programs. |
| For low tone - gymnastics will help more. Re-evaluate in a year. Swimming in the beginning is just splashing around, learning to float, get comfortable with face in the water. Find a way to just get him regular pool exposure - even if that's just to swim around with you, splash a bit, etc. Better if done with other kids around as an example. Once you build up comfort level in the pool, revisit the swim lessons. |
