For swim, you need to find the right place. I suggest starting at age 3-4 because kids need to know how to swim. It is a life skill. We love Swimkids - classes are small. The county classes were a disaster for a kid who doesn't like the water. Gymnastics is great if you can afford it. It is a true luxury. At age 3, you can get the same skills at a playground. My son started gymnastics at age 5 and has progressed quickly. If the kids is a decent athlete, they will be fine.
The county classes are hit or miss. Like anywhere, it depends on the instructor. The hard part is they change instructors each session so the kid likes one and it is abruptly switched. We've had mixed results with county but its worth doing as its cheap. Dobre Gymnastics is $70 a month which is much more affordable than several other of the studios. County also has programs.
