Farther north -- Long Beach Island, NJ?

Forgot to add -- Stick to hotels in places like Beach Haven on LBI.

Thx! We stopped in Stone Harbor last summer for the day, and couldn't find a decent hotel anywhere (we looked as far as AC). Lots of motels with 3 night minimums, and everything was booked solid. And that was the middle of the week in late August. Stone Harbor and Avalon seemed to be houses with weekly rentals and a handful of motels.

Is LBI the same?

It's 8.5 hours but cape cod...incredible place and you could go somewhere down Cape like Falmouth, new Seabury or cotuit.

LBI is the only place I can think of that fits the bill within 5 hr drive bause you have true beach and the bay side with good boating, fishing, etc. You could also check Lewes DE - different vibe than Rehobeth.

If you check on LBI I'd look in Ship Bottom or Beach Haven, These little towns are more commercial and might have motel openings. Otherwise the island is a lot of rental homes.

Honestly, it's hard to find cute coastal towns within a day's drive that won't be mobbed in July and August. How about heading to a lake instead? Maybe West Virginia or North Caroiina?

Mystic is great with kids. I have had really good luck with rooms at then Hilton Garden Inn just down the road in Graton 85-100/night.

Sandbridge has houses. No hotels for a two night stay (and all the houses/condos are week-long in the summer), no cute little Main Street that OP is looking for.

If you are thinking of Mystic, CT - you can get around most of the tolls by going to Harrisburg, and then pick up the interstates east to the Trappan Zee Bridge, which will dump you into Connecticut.

Does that add a lot of time to the trip?

Beaufort, NC is very cute. Small town feel, historic, beaches, fishing. You can take a ferry to Cape Lookout or islands wuth wild ponies. Great way to spend a day!
