| Cuddling and squishing with pillows. He likes to be squished. |
Mine likes to be squished too - roll him up in comforter and then lay on him. He thinks its funny, but it works. |
| Not sure if this would help, but my adhd 4 year old is often very hyper when it's time to go to bed and was staying up for 2 hours bouncing around his room after book time. We recently started putting on audio books after I left the room and it is remarkably helpful. He is shooing me out of his room as soon as we're done reading (before, he used to ask me a zillion questions, and open the door like 30 times after I left) and stays in bed to listen. Falls asleep within 10 to 50 minutes, depending on how tired he is, but almost never leaves his room any more. It's been life changing. I have another friend with a adhd hyper 4 year old who is doing the same thing with success. May not be directly helpful to your son if his issues are primarily sensory seeking but worth a try. the books we've chosen are stories he is familiar with, with soothing british voices. |
| My DD is 11 and still sensory seeking. We made her a texture sample book that she likes to flip through. It cost less than $10 to make using thrift store finds mostly. |
Both my ADHD kids love this. And to be honest, I (PTSD) love it when my SO squishes me. If he's traveling, I sleep under a featherbed. |
This is OP. I just wanted to report back that I tried the squishing technique and he LOVED it!! Giggled his head off and then immediately relaxed and conked out very soon after. Amazing. Thank you DCUM!! I also tried switching the routine, per another PPs advice, so we did bath & PJs first, then dinner, brush teeth and books. Worked SO MUCH better! And this morning I dressed him first thing when he woke up, avoiding the normal battle with 10 minutes to get out the door. |
So happy you found some techniques that helped. I love when people report back and some little piece of advice has helped.
|
It almost makes DCUM worth it, right? Tangentially, this experience also makes me more willing to try OT -- I had been holding off because $$ and I wasn't sure if it would be useful or not. |

Squishing is the best for us! We do baby squish, big squish, squish with pillow, squish with blanket, etc.
Mine also likes to be rubbed on the back and the legs, and sometimes I will use the brush (the sensory brush for skin). |
| Swinging calms my son. He loves it!! |
