Would you buy a new Apple laptop on Craigslist?

Anonymous
I wouldn't. And just because it's sealed brand new doesn't mean it really contains a Mac Book.

Cheapskate co-worker bought a brand new iPad Air 2 off CL for $75 at Christmas and it was unopened. Except when she opened it, it was just papers cut to fit the little tray inside to equal the weight of an iPad Air 2 and had been re-shrink wrapped.

I managed to track it down (the person who had it was an idiot) but the police found the thief and the buyer and charged both because you are never going to buy a legit Mac Book for $50.

I feel like most people who steal Apple products are idiots. Doesn't everyone have Find My ____ installed?

I found an iPhone on the Metro once and was so paranoid carrying it to find a police officer. I was positive that either the cops or the owner was going to tackle me at any moment thinking I was the one who stole it.

The only thing you should be buying off Craigslist is handjobs.

You're going to get robbed.
Promise.

This. Don't even THINK of doing this, OP. It is either a scam, or a set-up to rob you in person.

Someone found my dads IPhone and held it till they could get to the Apple Store. We put a message on the phone to call us and they did in minutes. The tracking only works when the phone is on. There are a few decent people like you. I would rather you or the people who found it keep it as security could steal it. Best to take it to an Apple Store.

I would not buy a used one.

I found an Iphone 6 a few months ago at TJMaxx a Friendship Heights. I gave it to the security at the store. it did not even cross my mind to take it with me and take to the Apple store, even when I took it to give it to security I held it in plain view far from my jacket or purse, I was so concerned somebody could see me and think I was actually trying to steal it. I think the suggestion to take to the Apple store may be good for the owner if the finder is not a thief, but is bad for the finder. if you leave the place where you find the phone with the phone, you may be accused to be a thief. saying "but I meant to take it to the Apple store" may not really help you.

A while back I got a free itouch when I bought a computer. I sold it on craigslist and would have been happy to meet at an Apple Store. As it happened, the person gave me the money and opened it. Clearly new. That was that.

Agree but these folks see clearly not keeping it. I have given phones to a store as they were not iPhones but that worries me.

It could be they used a stolen credit card number and bought it from a store.

When my iPad was stolen they wiped the device immediately so Find My iPad no longer worked. This was in 2012 so maybe things have changed but that is what I was told. It was no protection against theft at the time.

Perhaps the person selling it received it as a gift, but already had one.

Or they could have won it in a raffle as a prize.

I would ask them directly + see how they respond first.
