Voter discontent

I was a kid in 1964, and if I ever used that word, I wouldn't have been able to sit down for a year.

It was considered a no-no in my house--my grandmother told me that only "trash" used that word. However, I was a kid then, too--and I heard it. I'm pretty sure you'd even hear it on the television in those days.

The liberal socialist mindset is quite easy to see, it's called divide and conquer, pit one group against the other to further their cause and they will use race or wealth or anything else for that purpose to advance their agenda. Today, the black community is in total chaos from drug dependency, out of wedlock births, drive-bys and gang violence. Poverty and unemployment is through the roof and liberals know it is destructive and they have no intention of changing it, in fact they want to make it worse. Why would anybody support a party that gleefully supports such disastrous policies of self destruction? 25% of young black men are either in prison or awaiting sentencing and the number one cause of death for young black men is another young black male. Does this sound like progress to you? Of course it does, the Democrat Party has 98% of the black vote and that is all that matters.

Unemployment is lower than 5%, when the previous republican left office with unemployment at 10%. The previous president left the economy with largest depression since the 1930s, with millions of lost jobs. It takes time for the economy to recover and it has for the most part. More can be done if the republicans pass the infrastructure bill.

As for the black issue, democrats want to pass the criminal justice reform BUT the republican congress is stopping the bill from getting passed. Blacks and all other minorities WILL NOT vote for GOP until the GOP is quiet about the white supremacists whose vote the GOP is content to receive. Besides the GOP economic policy is to help the rich and NOT the poor whites, who are thrown a bone(with dog whistles and now open racism) which keeps them voting for GOP against their own economic interest. But they are fine as long as the blacks are poorer than them.

Politics has become a game of Promise the moon to everyone because the voters dont understand the complex system but want to vote someone who will give everything they want and also the opposite their neighbors want. So politicians are left to lie to get votes. If a politician tells that with debt equaling 80% of GDP and with the other party controlling the congress/presidency, nothing can really get done. If ANY politician tells this truth he/she wont be elected at all. So the choice has become the one between an narcissistic, incompetent LIAR and a competent liar. I think the choice is obvious, vote for competency since every politician is a Liar.

I have never been able to understand the incredible loyalty to a party that has had provided so little in return to a block of voters. The willingness to blindly follow and continue to support is beyond me.

I totally agree with you. The poor whites are never given anything by the GOP but yet they vote for them against their self interest because the GOP provides religion, dog whistles of racism and the contentment that as poor as they are, they are better off than blacks.

This is a different election. People are unhappy and feel the political and media class do not represent what they care about. The Republican Party and leadership was blindsided by Trump. Hillary struggled with a socialist who was not even in her party. Either one will be a one term president and maybe impeached. The republicans know they can win by shutting down the government if HRC is elected. The Dems have so demonized Trump that no dem will be able to work with him. It's going to be a very bad next few years.

The better option is to vote for Hillary and Senate will flip to help her pass some bills forcing republicans to do something in the house. If GOP doesn't do anything, demography is so against them that they will continue to lose unless they work responsibly AND start representing the middle class and poor, rather than the rich with more tax cuts.

The scorn is reserved for the racists and racists only. If someone is poor(black or white or whatever), then the poor need to be helped. Democratic policies support the poor more than gop policy of TAX cuts to the rich. Tell me one policy that the GOP has that supports the middle class and the poor? Drumpf supporters will say Wall is a policy. It is sad.

After listening to Comey, it is pretty clear that Trump must be the competent one--it's sure not Hillary.

The comments here are hysterical. Rich liberals spouting how Dems help the poor. How Hillary is “competent,” whatever the hell that means.
I live in a rural area in a different state.
The people here know the truth.
They have had 8 years under a Dem president. Things have only gotten worse.
They don’t want business as usual.
And, they certainly don’t want Hillary.
Should be an interesting few months.

Well you deserve Drumpf and then regret when he bankrupts USA like he did with his many companies, while he gets wealthier with Tax cuts for the rich.

Tell me the policies that Drumpf says will make the poor people better. The wall will not make people richer. His economic policies are even more tax cute for the rich. He can't stop trade, if he does USA will get into depression. USA benefits more from trade than other countries because we are a small country with only 320 million market, the rest of the world is 7 billion market. The majority of US companies gets more than 50% of their revenues and profits from outside the USA. GM has China as its largest market, Boeing sells more planes to rest of the world, Google/ Facebook etc are ad driven (so more eyeballs is more money), same goes for Caterpillar, Cisco, Microsoft etc etc. More jobs are created in the USA(white collar, if not blue collar) due to trade. Why do you think the educated people are against Drumpf?

True, a lot of people start life off with all sorts of disadvantages (no father in the house....uneducated parents....etc.), and they do need some help. But many people never escape from poverty, even with all sorts of social service programs. It's 50 years since LBJ's Great Society, and we are no further ahead now than we were then (in terms of poverty statistics.)

I'd like to see some liberals acknowledge that personal responsibility and motivation are factors, too. My father was born to immigrant parents who did not finish high school, and raised in cheap apartments - sometimes sharing a bathroom with other tenants. But he studied hard, aced his college entrance exam, and was admitted to a competitive tuition-free college. After that, he wanted a grad degree, so he got a job with the university he wanted to attend, and then went evenings for five years until he got his Master's. He and Mom waited until age 30 to have me because they wanted a secure financial footing before bring kids into the world. My parents were upper-middle class by their 40s.

My point is....yes, poor people do need help. But they also need to make responsible decisions. It's the COMBINATION that lifts one out of poverty. Will liberals agree?

I am a conservative and I totally agree.
I would add that those in poverty need a great education. They need to be in schools with teachers who care about their achievement and know how to reach them. They also need to be in schools where academics is a top priority. And, it would be great if children in poverty had a choice as to which school they went to.
I say all this as a teacher who taught mostly students in poverty.

Yes! I agree! Whole-heartedly.
I am liberal, and you are correct.
This is the culture of America. We are a nation of pick-yourself-up-by-your-boot-straps. That belief is inherent in how we govern and live. The people who do that are always going to be more successful. Some people have advantages, no shit, but it doesn't mean others can't do well. But you have TO BREAK the cycle (of poverty, teen pregnancy, drug addiction, terrible parenting). Sitting around and waiting for institutional changes? good luck. government is slow.
