Any PE teachers here? Policy question re: Montgomery or Fairfax public schools

50 burpees for a 9 yr old does seem excessive. I don't have a problem with the coach saying "2 laps" -- but usually coaches know that kids don't actually control when they arrive... so "punishment" seems inappropriate.

If this is a sports league, you should discuss this policy with the league director. We had a situation where our coach was totally inappropriate with the kids (similar age) telling them they were the worst team in the league and physically stripping their hoodies off of them. I had a chat with the director and she agreed that the things I mentioned and more were not the kind of behavior a coach should have. We left, but the coach (who was a volunteer) was given a lot of supervision by the head of youth teams for the rest of the season (they are desperate for coaches and didn't want to lose a willing, although inappropriate coach).

Anyway -- 50 seems like a lot. and "punishment" for something a 9 yr old can't control seems like the wrong idea. Chances are the league director does NOT want the coach to be punishing 9 yr olds. They want to keep the kids interested and participating in the league.

A sports team is totally different from PE class. Sure, in PE it would be inappropriate to single out a kid and make them do 50 burpees as you're dealing with kids who have no choice but to be there, have varying levels of physical ability, and burpees aren't in any way related to the actual curriculum trying to be taught.

That has nothing whatsoever to do with your snowflake's sports team. She is there voluntarily *for the express purpose* of physical exertion of some kind or another. She was late. She missed something and the coach needs her to not lose out on that time of her training. Would you object to 50 burpees if the whole team had to do them? They're a great way to get in shape.

This x 1000! This is what happens when you're late. Be on time next time and you won't have to worry about it.

+1. The coaches should make the parents do the burpees too, if it's their fault the kids are late.

She was a few minutes late for a practice (my fault, not hers) and was forced to do 50 burpees. Would this be allowed in public schools? The organization operates in Montgomery and Fairfax counties, so I'm particularly interested in those districts.

what?

ready to sue now b/c your kid held up the team?

Maybe you'll learn your lesson, OP.

It seems very excessive. Plus, I am not a fan of exercise as punishment. I want my kids to ve lifelong lovers of exercise.
