| Its a relatively new school in a new development of townhomes and condos. Families come and go with many new to America. |
| Coates has a steadily rising low income population and a VERY high mobility rate. Coates is only approaching it's second year of Title I status, meaning that it had these issues for a few years, without the extra support Title I provides. When it first opened, things were going quite well. The mobility rate and rising free and reduced lunch numbers along with some administration issues set it back a bit. A growing LLIV program that gives parents another option other than the very overcrowded, high pressure center at McNair, along with a very exciting administration change will mean great improvements for Coates. |
| Just back from vacation and saw this. Devastated to lose Jesse. |
Check out the boundaries--most of the families do NOT come from the new development around there. Yes, there is new development around the school--but the school is in a business area. The kids come from across the toll road behind Kohls. Very poor area. Very, very poor kids. |
http://www.fcps.edu/images/boundarymaps/lutielewiscoateses.pdf The housing developments behind Kohls do not go to Coates. That area goes to Hutchison ES. There is the development across the street from Kohls that feeds to Coates. Coates does have a rising low income population, but even at 49%, it is far from what it is being presented as. The school is literally a 50/50 balance between students receiving free and reduced lunch, and those who do not. There are townhouses right across the street that are somewhat new, as well as other townhouses, and newer condos and apartments behind the school and across Coppermine. |
| Coates sends home food packages on weekends with students. That's more than just poor when you have to provide weekend food for kids. |
A few per class, perhaps. So does every other FCPS school with Title I status. Coates is just over the threshold to even qualify for Title I status. My point was that someone seems bound and determined to paint the school as having entirely, or even mostly high poverty students. That is just not the case. It is as if on these boards, anything with more than 20% of students receiving free and reduced lunch is "extremely poor". |

| jessie k. does not like Latinos and it shows. He is vindictive and arrogant |
You dug up an old thread just to bash Jessie Kraft? You have issues. Mr.Kraft is wonderful. If you have a real complaint, random insults on DCUM are not going to help you. |
| I am not sure if the negative poster had a bad experience, but Mr. Kraft is one of the finest principals I have ever worked for (in a Title I school with a high Latino population). He really cares about all students, and is a constant presence around the school and in classrooms. He is also very well-liked by employees, and when he is at the helm, schools see much lower turnover than is typical. |
| When are they going to do something about McNair? That school is a ridiculous size and it seems like the AAP center is hurting other schools. |
