Its a relatively new school in a new development of townhomes and condos. Families come and go with many new to America.
Check out the boundaries--most of the families do NOT come from the new development around there. Yes, there is new development around the school--but the school is in a business area. The kids come from across the toll road behind Kohls. Very poor area. Very, very poor kids.
http://www.fcps.edu/images/boundarymaps/lutielewiscoateses.pdf The housing developments behind Kohls do not go to Coates. That area goes to Hutchison ES. There is the development across the street from Kohls that feeds to Coates. Coates does have a rising low income population, but even at 49%, it is far from what it is being presented as. The school is literally a 50/50 balance between students receiving free and reduced lunch, and those who do not. There are townhouses right across the street that are somewhat new, as well as other townhouses, and newer condos and apartments behind the school and across Coppermine.
