Right so what would it be being used for that's important to Note re privacy issues?

Depending on developing research they may find bio markers for other conditions like depression or other mental illnesses that could become pre-existing conditions and be used to discriminate against your child in future health care or even job scenarios.

I hope that we have passed some sort of effective genetic privacy policies before this risk becomes real. But my friends who work in the field are cautious about this info being recorded in their own and their children's electronic medical records.

Knowing about adverse reactions for kids considering heavy duty medication would likely cause you to weigh these factors differently.

Full disclosure - I work for Assurex Health, the company that markets the GeneSight test. I wanted to share two things: Patient information is kept completely private and secure, shared with your health care provider only. Your genetic information is also protected through various federal laws including HIPAA and GINA (Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act), which ensure the security of your personal and genetic information. More info on our website about patient privacy at: https://genesight.com/patients/patient-privacy/. Also, GeneSight is not diagnostic or predictive. It is a guide to medication selection for a variety of mental health needs. Please feel free to call our customer service line at 866.757.9204 or email us at support@assurexhealth.com - we'd be happy to talk to you about your unique situation.

Dos a doctor have to order this test? I can't figure out how to just get one.

Yes, doctor has to be signed up with the company and will have tests in office. The website says average cost to patient is about $300.

We paid $330 and it was very helpful to us. We were in the process of switching SSRIs for my DS and the results guided us to a med that has worked very well.

We are seeing Dominion Center for Behavioral Health Services in South Riding since they are in network. We just had the swab done and have an appointment with the LPN in Jan to discuss meds so we will see if it is useful. I'm recalling that it was just a copay, but we've had so many appointments in the last few weeks that I can't honestly remember what was what.

We have Federal BC/BS. Has anyone gotten a test paid for through them?

Dominion Center for Behavioral Health Services in South Riding, VA is in-network with BCBS. They have poor reviews online because their office staff ... isn't great. I'm always shocked when a person actually answers the phone. But the LNP we're working with seems fine. She's the one who brought up doing Gene Sight and we go back to see her in January for the results.

We had our follow up appointment and found the GeneSight results to be useful for medication selection. We were choosing between a couple of classes of medication. GeneSight indicated DS would have problems metabolizing one category of drugs. Meanwhile it showed he doesn't have the alleles associated with a bad reaction to one of the other drugs we were considering.

Our provider did say it's not 100% in that frequently there are drugs that test as "red" where a person does get some benefit from it. In fact the medication DS is currently on is "red" for him but it's the difference between him having uncontrollable meltdowns vs just going on tirades.

Our psychiatrist offers Genomind and the maximum OOP with them if your insurance doesn't cover it is $300. So far it looks like ours did with no special authorizations.

BTW, the Genetics department at Children's just started offering GeneSight. I just submitted it today and expect it will be $330, but will find out shortly.
