Someone tried to use our credit card unauthorized....

So is the card missing?
Can someone use just a card number at a store and not have the card in hand?

Don't the more sophisticated frausters have printers that can literally print out a card if they have the number? OP does the card referenced have a chip?

To go shopping at Walmart in Alexandria? Doesn't make sense. Gosh, I really wish it was someone from the outside. But I am terrified its my housekeeper. I don't know what to do. I do hope it's a random, internet hack though. But how do I know for sure???

It's the Analyst again. It's impossible for you to find out. Fraud is committed in complicated ways. It could've been done through a merchant breach, a random credit card number guess etc. Just relax.

OP here again, its just this nagging feeling I can't shake. I know she shops at Walmart. And Alexandria is close to where she lives. I realize I can't confront her but I honestly do wonder...

Which is e a fly why it is probably not her. Do you think she would try to use your credit card in a way that would easily be linked to her?

Op seriously, it's the 90s, learn how technology works. Your card info was compromised by another retailer whose system was breached. Your housekeeper did not sneak it out, try to use it at Walmart, then bring it back.

Our debit card was compromised last week. I only use it at ATMs, and mostly our bank's ATMs at that. The crook emptied our bank account. The bank put the money back in after a few days. The transactions were all at the same foreign ATM but I don't know exactly where. The card could have been cloned. That happened to us with a cc that didn't have a chip.

Don't go accusing your housekeeper. She isn't the culprit.

I've lost track of how many times our credit card number has been stolen, and they've NEVER had the actual card. Your housekeeper is probably the least likely scenario.

I can't imagine your housekeeper has the skillz to clone your card.

Right? Like she would be doing OP's dishes if she had these money making capabilities.

Yes. In my line of work, we've discovered that some cashiers allow customers to give them a number to key in the register in lieu of swiping or inserting a card. Because the card reader doesn't always pick up the card

This has happened to us several times, once after we took a weekend trip and used our card at several small restaurants. We figured someone at one of those places stole our number. Don't assume it's the housekeeper; this kind of thing happens all the time.

Ours was flagged at a local Home Depot. We don't have anyone who comes into our home.

My chip card was recently compromised. I have no idea who took the number but they made a cars and tried to spend $200 at McDonald's and $30 at another restaurant in Woodbridge. Chase sent me a replacement card in 1 day.

On the same account, the primary card is frequently (3 times a year) compromised. The secondary card has never been compromised. The difference in our spending is his is used online more often. Mine is used almost exclusively for in-person transactions.

The odds of it being the housekeeper are very low. That's not how these numbers get stolen.

Trust your instincts. People here are downplaying it for various reasons.

Find a new housekeeper, simply because that's no way to live (and she deserves better, too). got teenagers?
