| I think it's because the original story as depicted by disney is an obvious metaphor for parents who reject their gay children. |
Except there's a 70 year cannon in which Bucky Barnes is for all intents and purposes, Steve Rodgers' adopted son. The pairing of Bucky and cap makes about as much sense as Bruce Wayne hooking up with Dick Grayson. |
I only half watch Disney movies, but I missed this part. That does make sense though... I bet some people do feel that way..."conceal/don't feel/don't let it show/well now they know..."...yep, got it. My biggest problem with the movie/character is that everyone seems to idolize Elsa and I don't see her as a tragic hero, I see her as someone running from her problems to the point where her sister was the one who engaged with life and helped solve the problems. eh, well. At least it's a little more nuanced... not an Ernie/Bert thing. I remember being a kid and 'knowing' they were gay, being embarrassed at Bert's stereotype and wondering if Ernie was more asexual than gay. |
It is no more obvious a metaphor for this than for about 1,000 other things - not sure it is a logical outgrowth. |
I would argue that Anna is the strong one in the story, not Elsa. |
Yeah, I don't understand why of ALL things its only a metaphor for being gay. Its a metaphor for anything that makes a child different from other children. Too fat, disabled, black, immigrant etc. |
| But why does everything have to be specialized? Elsa...Bert/Ernie...can't they just be freaking children's entertainment characters?!? |
| ^^^meant "sexualized" not specialized |
This. |
+1 |
Most of these cartoons leave enough nuance in their relationships that gay people can project their fantasies on them. i don't get why popular characters should be specifically gay. |
| And what about Kristof? He loved his reindeer. And he doesn't even get a glittery dress. How is that fair? |
I was the PP who mentioned Ernie/Bert. I didn't really think anything was specialized or normalized. I just 'knew' what their sexual identity was, like I knew what mine was. I honestly don't think any kids characters were meant to be gay/straight... Some kids probably didn't think about it... I just happened to (straight female here)... but you put the pieces together and make your own judgements, you know? Right, Mr LOPART... RIGHT??? wink wink |
Dumbledore? |
My son would be devastated! |
