Do colleges have high school caps/quota?

Anonymous
Yes there are quotas. Back in the days of binding early admission it would admit lesser candidates and pass on others.

I would never make that move just for the schools. There are plenty of high performers at Herndon, plus a lot more economic and cultural diversity.

OP said the move isn't simply for the schools, but I think they'll find the McLean pyramid is excellent. We moved when DH got a promotion to a corporate position in Tysons and the opportunities have been great.

Wrong wrong wrong. You must not have a FCPS highschooler.

Every HS, HS student and Parent gets precisely this information and much more automatically from FCPS in charts, tables, lists and graphs in easily searchable database. Data is available from at least the last five years.

I know a few posters on here complain about Naviance being volunteer information, but we have found it to be extremely helpful and accurate/precise enough- especially for the in state VA schools.

To the OP: Last year around 50 students at McLean HS were accepted to UVA and around 30 enrolled .

McLean HS Stats for UVA

Class Apply Admit Enroll
2015 134 50 31
2014 138 54 33
2013 142 47 29
2012 107 37 27
2011 111 50 37
2010 93 31 16

AVERAGE GPA. : 4.20
AVERAGE 1600 SAT: 1417

My kids are in college now but for as long as I've known, these numbers are about the same at Langley: UVA accepts kids in about the top 10% or about 50 students and about 30 choose to attend each year. Just a note that all of these students have well above a 4.0 GPA.

According to the Marshall student newspaper, in the last three classes, 11, 24 and 15 students went to U. Va.

I've been an Ivy interviewer in this area for over 15 years, and I have a data set that goes pretty far back. For most school, the answer is no. The standard deviation on the number of kids we accept from any given school is often higher than the number of kids. One year we take one, but the next year we take three, or seven, if there are seven great kids. Also, some years at some schools are better than others, because there are a couple of high achievers that spur their classmates on, i.e. "If Aidan is entering Intel, maybe I will too."

For TJ, Stuyvesant, Phillips Andover, there's a limit of about a dozen.

There are no "hard" quotas but "soft" quotas do exist. Colleges will deny it and you won't find it.

Where state schools and NoVa are concerned, there seem to be soft regional quotas, but not hard school quotas. You will find many more kids going to the top state schools from some schools than others.

Are these considered attributes? By whom?

No caps or quotas. That would be illegal.

It's an opaque process though and it is generally accepted there are biases throughout the admissions process.

There are definitely caps. but then you have to weigh this against high achieving peer group.

The Dean of Admissions at UVA has a great blog addressing this and many other topics. Quotas come up all of the time. According to her, there is no quota: http://uvaapplication.blogspot.com/2011/10/uva-admission-and-regional-quotas.html?m=1

I am not going to plan their lives around college admissions and don't know how they will end up or what they will want to do in ~10 years. I did know moving lessened the number of Hispanic/black and/or poor peers they would be around for all of those years and that was enough for us to make the decision.
