Salon tipping question

I do this too

Just to blow everyone's mind--just spent $300 on a cut/full highlights. Great job. Worth every penny.

Ummm.....hate to blow your mind PP but for cut and full highlights that's not an uncommon price in the DC area - that also comes with a blow dry and styling I'm assuming?

I never tip in cash! Hell I NEVER carry cash so that would mean no one would ever get a tip from me.

At my salon I include the tip in total payment. Color and wash is $65. I round up to $80. The stylist is the one who usually washes my hair so the whole tip usually goes straight to her.

I don't know of any salons in dc or ny that allow you to put a tip on your card.

Well think what you will, the salon I go to which is in Bethesda has always allowed you to tip on your card. You guys think you know it all....but in the case you clearly do not.

High five. Went to the salon on thursday. $295 for cut and color (base color, highlights, who knows what else). It's the only thing I'm not cheap about.

$250 for a cut alone is insane unless it's a celebrity stylist or something...and then I think it's probably insane to go to them. $300 for cut and color does not strike me as insane, though I don't color my hair so I don't have a good frame of reference.

I usually give $3-5 to the shampooer, regardless of the price of the cut and then close to 20% to the stylist...rounding down to whatever cash I have on hand. For example, I used to go to a stylist who charged $115. I would give her $20 and her assistant $5, making the total tip slightly above 20%. I don't think this was offensive to her, since I never had trouble getting in with her and she often offered (though I never took her up on it) to give me a quick neck trim etc for free between cuts and to just let the front desk know it was me even if she didn't have an available slot.

I've now found someone who is much closer to me, charges less, and doens't use an assistant. I tip her 20% on my CC. The only downside with her is she is a little scatter-brained and takes longer.

Bethesda isn't in DC.

Please. My haircut is close to 300. You're not special and I'm not either. 300 is pretty standard for a cut and highlights.

Are you paying $300 for just the cut? Or the cut and color? Big difference.

Which is how my blue collar, hair dresser mom, who would be so disdained on DCUM, put 2 kids through private university! Thanks!

Right? Everyone makes a big deal about restaurant tipping because they make lower than minimum wage hourly. But each member of the salon team should be making enough.

Down with tips. (I will still do it as it is the norm...but you're right, their service price and their pay should be adjusted.)

Yeah, that's not mind blowing to me. Last time I went to the salon it was close to $600.
