Basically, kids for whom failing the SOLs are not a concern by the administration will be getting Level III.

Level III services are weekly pullout project hased classes with the AART combined with accelerated math.

By "weekly," it also means that any weeks when you can't meet because of holidays, snow days, teacher meetings, AAP time for other kids (i.e. when the local school starts reviewing the applications for the then-current second graders). At our school it means 1x/week pull out many, but no where near all, weeks.

In our school, Level III is a pullout and they may do some math-oriented activities, but it is more like problem-solving. For instance, earlier this year they did a segment on innovation and developing new products/ideas to better meet the needs of consumers - i.e., think IDEO and how they work to improve everyday products (google Nightline segment on IDEO and shopping carts). I know students who get pulled for advanced math do not do Level III AAP in the target language.

So, do all schools offer an opportunity for advanced math in third grade? How are students selected for this? Is there any flexible grouping for subjects generally?

At our school Level iii are full-time in a classroom with the LLIV kids who chose not to go to the center. There are lots of kids receiving level II as pullouts or in-class supplemental activities but necessarily fewer level iii. Every school is different.
