Palisades?

compared to the serious burbs, maybe. But compared with other NW DC neighborhoods parking is easy in the Palisades.
As for Sibley, it's a community hospital. Dont go there for anything related to spine, brain, heart! It's basically a baby factory. But, no, they do not have specialty in pediatrics so always send your kid to Children's for major emergency (esp involving head)

Rabies shot pp here. Sorry, didn't know!

Metro = more commercial business and denser population = better opportunities for crime.

No doubt some criminals use it to get where they're going but I doubt that's the key reason for increased crime.

(this may be true of other DC quadrants, or not. I have not studied them).

Correlation does not necessarily indicate causality, Ms. Faulty Syllogism. It is much more likely that because these are also neighborhoods with fewer pedestrians, the environment is less target-rich. In fact, the youths who usually commit these crimes would have a hard time blending in because pedestrians in general arouse questions... especially pedestrians who do not fit the demographics in a residential neighborhood. So, it isn't that they can't get there to commit crimes without public transportation (car ownership isn't that exclusive, after all), it is more reasonably that they would have fewer mugging opportunities and would be more likely to get caught.

We have lived in Palisades for 3+ years. We really love it (Palisades, Kent and Berkley all kind of run together) . I personally love several architecture styles from the 1920s and there are lots of different kinds of architecture. In fact, in some areas of Palisades opportunites to buy a real fixer-upper still exist. Super nice people. Neighbors who look out for one another. Still has a mix of ages but does tend toward younger families with children. Nice mix of working and stay at home moms, too.

There are actually some really good (even great) restaurants that are walkable from most of the nightborhood: Black Salt, Et Voila, Kemble Park Tavern, DC Boathouse, Kotobuki, Macado, and then the family freindly ones like Listrani's and the Boathouse on Sunday nights. It is very acessible to both MD and VA, and, although there is no Metro, the bus service is good and well-used. Lots of walkable areas such as along MacArthur Blvd and, in fact, MacArthur itself is considered a major bike-way. Battery-Kemble Park is a great place for a short "hike" with kids and dogs. Palisades Park is great for kids to bike/skate around the track, the little kids playground, local kids soccer and baseball games, etc...

Sibley is good for non-life threatening emergencies like cuts that need stitches and broken bones. For serious stuff, G'town Hospital is very close. The Public Elementary is supposed to be quite good (Bue Ribbon winner, gorgeous renovation) and most Private Schools are easily accessible and well-represented (so, if you choose private your child will likely have some school mates living close by, too). In fact, for acessibility, I think it can't be beat. Parking may sometimes be a tiny bit tight in the section below MacArthur on Sherier, but mostly its not a problem. The Public Library has an exceptionally helpful and kind staff.

Overall, having lived in several parts of NW DC and N.VA, Palisades/Kent/Berkley is, IMHO, almost perfect. Biggest negative is the airplane noise but it is no worse than Georgetown or North Arlington.

If you read carefully -- which should be easy for you given your ability to understand and use such Big Boy Words -- you'll see that I at no point asserted that public transportation caused crime in NW DC neighborhoods. The relationship is more nuanced than that, but it is a stark fact that NW neighborhoods that are less served by public transport (Metro or bus) have lower rates of street crime.*

So we can have a rollicking Urban Institute discussion of why this is so, sure. In the meantime, OP should know that s/he's looking at a neighborhood that historically has had lower rates of crime than other NW DC neighborhoods that feature similar demographics, housing stock, elementary schools and the like.

(*with the notable exception of far eastern Chevy Chase DC by the park/Oregon Ave.)

NP here--actually, Georgetown, which is not served by metro, has high rates of street crime compared to many other neighborhoods.

But G'town is served by many bus lines on M and Wisconsin Ave.

Anyone who has ever waited for a bus outside of rush hour service will know that this would be a completely useless getaway plan. In fact, it's not much of a get anywhere plan.

New poster here. I live in Georgetown, and I'm pretty sure that most of our criminals do not take city buses home to their respective neighborhoods!

There's crime in Georgetown because we have tons of stores, restaurants, and bars. It's because of the crowds. If you take a close look at the crime stats, nearly all occur on M Street and Wisconsin - stores and bars, and occasionally a smashed car window because someone left their GPS in plain sight. When there is a home break-in (which is rare) it's usually a student house with open doors and windows.

And then, unfortunately, there is usually a high-profile and violent crime every two years or so. But that's just life in the city....

Anyhow, I don't think you can blame public transportation - or lack of it - for crime in this neighborhood.

Or Bethesda...

How do you figure? Last time I checked, Palisades was under the flight path and closer to the airport. Only the part of Bethesda along the river is similar. By the time plane make their move they are usually beyond the beltway and more than 3500-4000 feet up.

Where can you find homes by the river or with a river view?

I don't hear airplane noise in Bethesda!

Georgetown and McLean have river views.
