Potomac School Girls' Lacrosse Program - is it improving under Bordley?

Um, no. Very few impact players on the boys team. Potomac girls has 3 terrific players, but 2 are seniors. Goalie is a freshman and is ok. The rest are marginal.

Only a handful of girls in this area would consider Potomac any time soon in terms of lax. SSSAS, BI, Visi, Holy Cross, Good Counsel, etc. are just some who have much stronger programs.

Honestly, I don't think you can "count" on Potomac as even with a hook like Lacrosse, it is not an easy school to get into. We had a hook as well and strong academics and were still sweating.

Yes, indeed, and this is why I am asking if Bordley's positioning as head Varsity Lax coach AND as an admissions person means Potomac may be looking to "recruit" some solid girl lax players. The signs seem good but hard to tell for sure. It would be fun to be in a rapidly improving program and seems like now is when they would be looking to get some good girls lax players in for the 7th-9th grade classes.

Agreed. This is my thought as well but didn't know she was on the admissions team as well. Our daughter is a top student at another private but looking to move for high school and her profile fits Potomac well. Their middle school team seems to be ok but not outstanding so it would make sense that they hope to recruit a few girls to build out their team in high school.

Yes it will certainly help to have the lacrosse hook. The new Head of School has really committed to beyond numbers. That being said, the numbers still have to be decent. Sounds like they are for your daughter so it shouldn't be a problem.

Well that's good news for next year applicants who are great lacrosse players (and otherwise qualified/strong). It starts with a great coach.

I am not sure that getting to the same level as SSSAS should be a primary objective. In many ways, SSSAS is a "one trick pony" in that their entire women's athletics program is subservient to one sport. Arguably, their academic program is also subservient to the all-mighty lax gods. Potomac school has done pretty well historically in graduating their best girls lacrosse players to schools like Yale, BC, and UVA.

Very little of lacrosse recruiting is based upon high school play. In fact, college coaches rarely ever see their recruits play in a high school game due to the conflict of in-season games and practices. Most recruiting happens through the clubs. I am not discounting the importance of a decent high school program, and certainly not the importance of a good high school coach (both of which Potomac certainly has).

Only aware of the one amazing senior who is going to BC. There is an amazing sophomore who is committed to UVA. They do seem to be improving their record each season. How does the current 7th/8th A team look? Any 8th graders who may make varsity in 9th?

Potomac girs lacrosse program was pretty average before Bordley took over.

Have they improved YES.

Are they elite NO.

They are on par with Stone Ridge and Holton arms but will probably surpass them in a year.

SSSA lacrosse programs have thrust it into the elite private school category. Very smart and shrewd move to focus on this "one trick".

Potomac had a great girls coach about 8 years ago. Won consistently and took them to the state championship, IIRC. They canned her because they said she was too tough on the girls.

Potomac has a ton of turnover in their athletic coaching staff. Bordley is doing a very good job. Hopefully they don't screw it up.

Big win for Potomac over Holton Arms this afternoon, Bordley's alma mater.

Big win? You are calling a win against Holton Arms a big win?

For Potomac it is - yes.

Sorry I assume you are some uber intense visitation mom.

Holton has bigger problems these days with its drinking board member hosting under-aged parties.

Holton is building a great team that's getting lots of recognition - freshman commit to Harvard and sophomore commit to Stanford in addition to a few junior commits and other strong players.

How does one "commit" to Harvard with one semester of high school grades under your belt?
