Colleges similar to W&L but not as selective

College of Charleston. Ohio Wesleyan. Rhodes (esp. if you are Christian). The Minnesota schools: Macalester, Carleton, Gustavus Adolphus (slightly more liberal). Wabash (if you're male). Gettysburg (slightly less selective).

Elon, if you are looking for a lot less selective (the schools I mentioned above are pretty selective).

Not sure about the rest of your list (no personal experience) but the above are NOT good choices for someone who wants a preppy, fratty, conservative type school. I went to Carleton, have a kid at Mac, and have lots of friends/relatives who attended Gustavus Adolphus and they are all very liberal, intellectual, kind of hipster-y type places. In fact, I'd suggest these three schools to someone who absolutely DOESN'T want a school at all like W&L.

Carleton and Mac are also among the most selective liberal arts colleges in the nation (Gustavus Adolphus less so), comparable to or even more selective than W&L.

Another Carleton alum here and I laughed when I saw Carleton on the list. I don't think Paleocon will be comfortable in the school that birthed the late Paul Wellstone. Carleton is also pretty unpreppy, although I was comfortable there in my green wide wale cords and whale print belts.

Did you wear these ironically?

Haha, no, although that would be a very Carleton thing to do. This was the 80s before people dressed ironically. It was just what I wore. I had monogrammed sweaters too.

Hampden-Sydney College. Some would argue that it has the real W&L vibe due to its all male status (W&L use to be all Male). Once W&L went coed it lost that male bonding that really makes for life long bonds of brotherhood. Don't worry there are plenty of ladies on the weekends at H-SC! But the all male aspect really does create a special atmosphere that it hard to replicate in a coed environment.

somewhat recent W&L alumna here.

Options that seemed similar to me are: Elon and High Point (becoming more and more popular in the north by the year), College of Charleston (though many students are really, really dumb), University of Richmond, Sewanee, Lehigh and Gettysburg (not as southern, but feel as preppy and fratty), Furman, Washington College in Chestertown, MD, Lynchburg College, Randolph-Macon College, Rollins (Florida)

Lehigh and Gettysburg, not as southern? That might be because they are northern schools. It is hard to believe you are a W&L alum with that list.

I'm a Mary Washington grad and loved my time there. However, it has nothing in common with W&L, other than the lovely campus - which is why I chose it. I had no desire for a Greek system, and Mary Washington fit the bill. Great student body, everyone is friends with one another, no frats or sororities.
