School bus at intersection question

One way to think of it is that the law is designed not just to protect the kids immediately loading/unloading, but to protect kids who are running from any potential direction to catch the bus. If someone behind you honks, let them. They can go around if they want to disobey the law.

Page 16 does not have anything to do with buses (?). It talks about how to go around a roundabout and how to pass another vehicle. (?)

Go to page 14 and it clearly talks about school buses.

Page 16 of the pdf. Page 14 as paginated. Or you could do an alt-F and search for "school bus".

The only situation where you can go is a divided road if you are in the direction opposite the bus. For example Chain Bridge Rd near the parkway.

I was in this situation recently and had no idea what to do. I stopped, and then wondered if that was wrong, so I inched forward a bit. This mom gave me the dirtiest look ever - and that answered my question!

Also, if this was in MoCo, beware that some MCPS buses have cameras for catching drivers who pass buses with their red lights flashing. It's a hefty fine and points. Not worth it.

I would have chosen to proceed, however much slower than I usually would when no school bus is present.

You just never know kids....They are very unpredictable and one could easily run into the intersection.

I was stopped at a stop sign as I see the buss approaching the children it was already the 5 seconds I was waiting at the stop sign fully stopped with no oncoming cars to my left and right I see the bus turn on it’s flashing yellow lights and I know that means to slow down and I was on coming it I know to drop lower than 20 so I was going slow as soon as she opened the stop sign I stopped which is how she was able to catch my license bc I stopped before the bus line and saw her writing down my license I arrived before her to the stop sign at the intersection which is why I went Someone help

You need to STOP. If the bus if facing the intersection, all traffic in that intersection must stop. Not just direct passing traffic. ALL OF IT.

Help with what? When you see the lights flashing, STOP. This isn't hard. You did not stop. "Going slow" is not stopping.

My situation (in Maryland) when leaving my neighborhood on residential streets is at a four-way stop. Sometimes a school bus is picking up kids at the corner perpendicular to me. So is it OK for me to keep going straight on my street, past the front of the bus, after stopping? I think so, but I want to be careful since there are a lot of kids running around. Yesterday, the car behind me honked for me to go, so I did.

STOP until the bus sign is gone.

STOP. The law is to protect kids running to or from the bus. They can do that to or from any direction. You can continue only if you are on the other side of a highway divided by a median.

Not sure I understand what you need, but if you stopped when the stop sign came out, you are fine.

....and that's why the law says STOP.

I know I will be attacked bc y'all love the mob mentality...

But why is it that kids automatically are presumed to lose all previously taught indications of traffic (like... look before you cross the street...) when a bus is within sight? Why does a bus = nobody can do anything, every car everywhere must STOP and wait because children will be flying from every direction and no longer are able to stop and watch for traffic, as they do when they walk to school / walk .5 mile to the bus stop across many roadways?!?
