Height gain after period

Anonymous
Hmm. I have noticed that some girls who work out a lot (like competitive swimmers) tend to be a lot taller than their parents. I read that periods can be delayed several years in girls that exercise so much, so I wonder if there is a connection.

I may be an outlier but I got my period when I was almost 13 and then grew about 6-7 inches after that. I grew a lot in high school.

The average is 0.5 to 1.5 inches after your period. Most girls are done full growth 2 years after their period starts. There are some that do grow some more after 2 years but most do not. My guess is she will sprout some right before her period.

How much does she weigh? Before 14 the girls usually get their period soon after turning 90lbs. It is the weight pediatricians say seems to be the turning point of your body saying "PUBERTY TIME!"

Another outlier here -- did not get my period until I was nearly 15, and then grew 6 more inches after that (including 2 that I put on in my first two years at college).

It is normal. It also normal to keep growing.

OP, what happened with other women in your family and your husband's family are probably the best estimates of what will happen with your daughter.

My brothers got their growth spurts early and then were done by 16. I am guessing that my sons will be the same way, since DS#1 is hitting his growth spurt early. Some of my male friends from college weren't done growing until 22 or so, though. It just depends on your genetics.

You're talking about males. Males keep growing after puberty. I thought women did not. I know DH grew until junior year of college.

IDK I got my period at 13 and weighed under 90lbs until freshman year of HS.

DD is a competitive swimmer, and our endocrinologist (whom we see for another child) has told us that there is no connection between swimming a lot and delayed onset of period. There *IS* a connection between sports that pound the body - gymnastics, ice skating, running, etc - but not swimming. DD was on the latish side for her period (13.5), but her friends whom she swims with mostly got their periods around 10-11.
