I started my job search 10 months ago when I was 49 (I am now 50). I have 2 graduate level STEM degrees from MIT and while I've had interviews at two organizations, I have had no offers. Finding a job when you are over 50 is tough! I am guessing it will be over a year before I find something...hopefully not 2 years. |
+1000 I wish people would realize some day they'll be over 50 and need a job too! Hey, mothers of advanced maternal age - odds are you'll need to be working well into your 50s / 60s or even later to help support the kids you had so late in life. Give a sister a break! |
| Applied in Novembet, started this month. |
| A year. Found the job on USAJobs. Mid-forties. Re-entry after taking time off for kids. |
| About 3 weeks. I used LinkedIn and did the free month job seeker premium so I could see stats about who was applying to jobs and estimated salaries, etc, since I was going back to full-time work after freelancing for a couple of years. Super helpful. |
| About a week and a half but I was on their radar already and the position was already vacant, since the predecessor was abruptly fired. |
I'm 50 with an 11 yo and an 8 yo. I've been working for so long that my network is huge. So finding a job has never been a problem. But I can see how it would be difficult if you stepped out - ex, having a baby at 38, staying home for a few years and then heading back in. Unless you keep up with your contacts, you're doomed . . . No one thinks much of the "older folks." |
