Amidon-Bowen. It is largely in-bounds (and guarantees admission to IB families who choose it in the lottery, so long as they don't get into a school they ranked higher) but there have been OOB spots available every year in the past. It's close to the metro (basically every line but red) and bus routes. They use Tools of the Mind. Test scores in upper grades are terrible but people of all races and classes seem happy with the PK program. Class sizes are small, teachers and aides seem nice, and they have some good arts and music programming, plus a full library.

Garrison. Terrific Principal and school is making great strides, particularly when/if they get the long-awaited renovation done. I think parents will look back in 3-5 years and wish they'd taken the jump when you could still get in without an IB preference.

So when is the renovation going to start? The main reason I hesitate to list it is that I don't want to be in a place with ongoing renovations.

People were talking about renovating Garrison when we were applying for preschools. DC is in third grade now.

They are having an Open House this Saturday from 9:00 - 12:00.

I don't think they accepted OOB for PK3 last year, or am I wrong?

Not in the common lottery, but Bethune is a great safety school for PK3 and PK4.

Yeah if a renovation is a strike against a school for you, you are pretty safe putting Garrison on your list (unfortunately).

Burroughs. Langdon Montessori.

Bridges will likely be a good Avery this year with the move. And very convenient for anyone with commutes on the Red Green and Yellow lines as their location is directly adjacent to Fort Totten.

I thought it would be a good safety, and got a waitlist number under 5. Somehow I never got a call....

Don't think of it as a safety unless you're friends with a secretary or similar.

Their classes aren't full. Did you call them?

No I got in another school and didn't feel like calling. But they specifically told me they would call me when a spot opened... And never did.
